Trolleybus – the other electric bus

Trolleybus? A bus that runs like a train, but without rail? It has lost a little bit in popularity, and has a disadvantage compared to battery-powered electric or hybrid buses: you cannot send the bus somewhere else outside the track when needed. But it has a huge advantage compared to battery powered electric buses: you do not need to charge them for hours.

Combine this with larger vehicles that run on a specific track – like in a BRT bus rapid transit system – and you get about the same advantage like with a tramway for a much lower cost.

One installation is currently build up in Italy. When fully operational, the line will run in 20-25 minutes, with a trolleybus passing every 10 minutes on average. Pescara’s trolleybus fleet currently consists of six Exquicity 18 T high-capacity articulated trolleybuses built by Van Hool.
