The Government of North Macedonia has announced on July 9th the long awaited start of the construction of the North Macedonia–Greece Interconnector Gas Pipeline.

The interconnector will run near the Nea Messimvria compressor station to the customs station of Evzoni in Greece, then to Gevgelija and Negotino in North Macedonia. It is pperated by DESFA SA in Greece and Nomagas in North Macedonia with a capacity of 1,5 bill. cubic meters/year with the possibility to double. It stretches 70 km in North Macedonia and 56 km in Greece. The project costs 60 million € and is financed by EIB and EBRD in the framework of the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF). Completion is planned after 34 months. (See SEEnews.com)

The project will give an alternative connection of the Macedonian gas network. At the moment, the only connection comes from Bulgaria to Skopje, orginally only transporting Russian gas. With the completion of the Greek-Bulgarian Interconnector, also gas from other sources can be transported to North Macedonia. There is a LPG gas decharging point in Aleksandropolis that should serve as alternate source. Additionally, a connection to Serbia is planned. The pipeline should also be capable to transport Hydrogen.
