It was a standard in Belgium: salaries were increased with inflation. This will now be limited, indexation will only work till a cap of 4000 € for wages and 2000 € for pensions and benefits.
Every year in January, the salaries of employees working in companies under the Joint Industrial Committee 200 (JIC 200) are adjusted to reflect the cost of living. This adjustment process is known as wage indexation in Belgium. The monthly salary is increased by a percentage that corresponds to the inflation rate of the previous calendar year. This ensures that employees’ salaries keep pace with the rising cost of living.
Wages for over half a million employees in Belgium will increase by 2.21 % on 1 January. The rise covers over half a million workers across around 30 sectors. Other sectors will also benefit from January increases, sectors will apply lower or differing indexation rates.
