New Blockage of freight border crossings to Schengen area – or will the new EU visa strategy bring a solution?

Truck drivers might block again the border crossings to Schengen countries due to problems caused by the new Entry/Exit System (EES). Meanwhile, the EU has announced a visa strategy that may allow a solution for trusted travelers and companies.

Transporters from the Western Balkans already went on strike from January 26 to 30, blocking cargo terminals at all regional border crossings to the EU. The drivers went on strike because the new international transport system banned them from staying in Schengen countries for more than 90 days, after which they were arrested and deported, which prevented them from working normally.

European Commission agreed to consider special visas for professional drivers. However, subsequent meetings of the technical working group have not made any progress in resolving the issue. The next meeting is planned for February 23rd, and actions might happen before or after.

The EU Commission has adopted a EU Visa Strategy on January 29th, 2026. It contains Multiple entry visas with a longer validity for trusted travellers, to stimulate economic activity and reward visitors with a proven travel history and a common list of verified companies.

A blockage would bring difficulties for Macedonian factories that deliver the Schengen area or the UK by truck.
