Belgium ranks top in plastic recycling – North Macedonia offers opportunities

Published by

In 2022, Belgium recycled 54 % of its plastic packaging waste, just behind Slovakia, which leads with 60 %. Recycling rates in the Western Balkan countries are below 3 % in comparison, versus a target of 85 % for plastics. This gives opportunities for investors and solution providers.

In North Macedonia, less than 1 % of collected municipal solid waste is recycled, the rest is landfilled. Extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes do achieve considerably better recycling rates, for example in the packaging scheme, 39% for plastics.

Recent developments offer new opportunities, like the 15-year public-private partnership (PPP) between the Austrian company ‘Saubermacher’ and the Municipality of Tetovo. (Info here)
