In the first quarter of this year, Antwerp’s container throughput reached 3.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), compared to Rotterdam’s 3.3 million TEU.

The “Port of Antwerp-Bruges” is Europe’s second largest port with more than 800 destinations and 300 liner services. The port generates 72 600 direct jobs and no less than €20 billion in added value.

Since 2022, the port authorities of Antwerp and Bruges (Zeebrugge) are merged. In international comparison, Antwerp ranks # 14.

Today, one ship can carry 20 000 TEU. The port is extending the storage capacity to cope with the volumes. It is also testing a ‘digital twin’ of the port, sensors, autonomous drones and smart cameras for inspection or oil spill detection.
