After several months of coordination with the European Union, North Macedonia is officially launching the “Vezilka” project – the country’s first national artificial intelligence center. The initiative was originally presented in October 2025 by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Minister of Digital Transformation Stefan Andonovski. The agreement was signed on May 5, marking the official start of AI technology implementation in the country, according to the Ministry of Digital Transformation.

The €6.2 million project is supported by the EU, the government, and the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering (FINKI). “Vezilka” aims to strengthen North Macedonia’s digital future by developing AI solutions for healthcare, education, energy, agriculture, and public administration.

One of the project’s key goals is the creation of Macedonian-language AI models through the digitization of books, archives, and public data. The center will also provide support for startups, researchers, and companies through training programs and access to European supercomputing resources.

Officials say the project is an important step toward North Macedonia’s digital future and stronger integration into Europe’s technology sector.
